Punjab schools enter final

NEW DELHI: Basant Singh scored a late goal as Sat Guru Partap Singh Academy, Sri Bhaini Sahib (Ludhiana) defeated favourite Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School (Jalandhar) 1-0 and qualified for the final of the 36th ONGC-Nehru junior hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Tuesday.

Lyallpur was stunned when Basant (63rd minute) struck a field goal that eventually proved to be the winner.

In the final on Wednesday, the Ludhiana School will meet Government Model Senior Secondary School, Ladowali (Jalandhar). In the other semifinal, Ladowali school edged past Guru Harkrishan Public School, Shahdara (Delhi) 3-2. Jaswinder Singh struck in the fifth minute to put Ladowali school ahead, but Vikram Sangwan (26th) equalised through a good field goal. Manjinder Singh scored two minutes from the break as the Jalandhar school took a 2-1 lead. Hardeep Singh (55th) made it 3-1 before Mahendra Oram (67th) reduced the margin. — Principal Correspondent
