St. Joseph’s, G.V. Raja in final

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Host St. Joseph’s HSS scored a 40-17 win over St. Thomas HSS to enter the final of the Fr. Ephrem Trophy inter-school basketball tournament here on Tuesday.

In the second semifinal, G.V. Raja Sports School defeated St. Thomas HSS, Kozhencherry, 62-49.

The results:

Boys: Semifinals: St. Joseph’s 40 (S. Shan 11, Jinson Eugin 10) bt St. Thomas 17 (Jiby John 11); G.V. Raja SS 62 (Naiswin 19, Dinu 15, A.R. Shinil Raj 10) bt St. Thomas, Kozhencherry, 49 (Richard Baby 19).

Senior men’s hockey

The 53rd State senior men’s hockey championship will be held at the Municipal Stadium, Thalassery, from November 25 to 28.

Fifteen teams including defending champion Thiruvananthapuram and last year’s runner-up SAI (Kollam) will take part in the tournament.

The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knock-out basis. The teams have been divided into four groups and the group winner will qualify for the semifinals which will be held on November 27. The final is slated for November 28.

The groupings:

Pool ‘A’: Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Idukki, Alappuzha. Pool ‘B’: Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kasargod. Pool ‘C’: Thrissur, Kannur, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam. Pool ‘D’: SAI (Kollam), Ernakulam, Wayanad.

Nelto to lead

Ernakulam’s defender Nelto Sebastian will lead Kerala in the 44th B.C. Roy Trophy National junior football championship beginning in Gurgaon, Haryana, on Wednesday.

Kerala is in Cluster 4 with Assam and Himachal Pradesh, and opens its campaign against the latter on November 17.

Cash incentive

The Thiruvananthapuram District Basketball Association has announced a cash incentive of Rs. 10,000 to the men’s and women’s teams if they win the State championships at Thalassery.

The TDBA has also announced an incentive of Rs. 1,000 each to players from the district who have been selected to the State team for the National championships which will be held in Pondicherry.

Football trials

Trials to select the Thiruvananthapuram district under-21 football team will be held at 8 a.m. at the Medical College ground on November 15. Those born on or after January, 1, 1998 are eligible.
