“Enact women’s quota Bill in Parliament”

Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya State president Pasya Padma on Tuesday demanded enactment of Women’s Reservation Bill in the current Parliament session.

Though all political parties backed the Bill, it was pending since a decade on the pretext of reaching a consensus, she said in the Samakhya’s fourth district mahasabha here.

Prices of essential commodities rose by 50 per cent in the last five years and could rise by another 30 per cent in the next two years, she cautioned. She demanded amendment of Essential Commodities Act 2003 to unearth hoarding of commodities.

Demanding that the Government close down belt shops, which sprang up in every nook and corner, she warned that the Samakhya would otherwise take lead in closing them down.

Ms. Padma demanded stern action against “sadists who were murdering or maiming young women” when the latter refused to yield to pressure to fall in love with them.

School and college students should be trained in self-defence techniques, she emphasised.

Flag hoisted

The Domestic Violence Act has protected women from acts of domestic violence, Samakhya vice-president K. Aruna said. State secretary Ameena decried sex determination tests, which had led to a drop in the ratio of women to men. Samakhya leader P. Parvathamma hoisted the flag and Sanjeevamma presided.
