BANGALORE: Sports Authority of India (SAI) stunned Karnataka State Police (KSP) 1-0 in the Super Division football league at the Football Stadium here on Monday. Amarnath netted the all important goal for the young SAI boys in the 85th minute. SAI now has 12 points after three wins and three drawn encounters from 10 matches while the State Cops have 18 points from 10 outings (five wins, three draw). In an ‘A’ division clash, BUFC drubbed universal 5-1 with goals from Madhu (20th), Sharath (22nd), Kamal (24th), Ashok (62nd) and Chethan (78th). Harish scored Universal’s consolation goal in the 63rd minute. At the 515 Army Base workshop ground, Hindu Social and Minerva were involved in a 2-2 draw. Anthony (3rd) and Prasanna (55th) scored for Hindu Social while Ishwar (51st) and Kishore (67th) netted for Minerva. 20 to get KOA AwardsVeteran Olympian footballer Varadaraj is amongst the 20 recipients of the Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) awards for 2007. Varadaraj, an outstanding goalkeeper, represented India at the London (1948) and Helsinki (1952) Olympics and was widely lauded for his performance. The awards function will be held at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, on Wednesday. Briefing the media here, Mr. K. Govindaraj, KOA President, said that Rs. 1.67 crores has been sanctioned for the conduct of the State Olympic Games to be held in the rural districts in January/February 2008. Financial assistance“KOA will provide financial assistance to needy sportspersons suffering from various ailments, if brought to its notice through the respective state associations. Besides the cash awards to state teams winning national honours has also been enhanced while affiliated units conducting national championships too will be provided assistance of Rs. 25,000.” added Mr. Govindaraj. The award winners: Kavya Muthanna (athletics), L. Kruthika (basketball), Ashwini Ponnappa (badminton), N. Lokesh (cycling), N. Bindu (fencing), B.V. Chethan Kumar (football), Anup Anthony (hockey). S. Premnath (handball), M.Srinivas (kho-kho), M. Rajesh (rifle shooting), K. Lohith Kumar (taekwondo). J.P. Arjun (swimming), Somnath S. Girigoud (volleyball), S.Pradeep Kumar (swimming coach), P. Margalingam (International . volleyball referee’s instructor), S.S. Shreekumar and Kalyan Ashok (both sports journalists). A. William Joseph (sports promoter), Varadaraj (veteran Olympian footballer) and B.N. Shankarnarayan (veteran sports administrator). Merchants FC posts winMerchants FC (Mangalore) scored a solitary-goal win over Narayana Guru FC (Hejamady) in the Ahmed Master B division football league at the Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on Monday. Vipin scored the winner in the seventh minute of the second half.
