Writer’s caution on contentious issues
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: U.R. Ananthamurthy, Jnanpith Award winner, has suggested to the BJP-led Government what he calls a “two-point action plan” on the contentious iron ore mining and Bababudangiri.
In a statement, Dr. Ananthamurthy pointed out that Karnataka, which was known for its egalitarian and secular spirit, should at no cost be allowed to become “another Gujarat.”
He said that the religious practices at Bababudangiri were unique and do not adhere to any single stream of religious thought.
Such a syncretic place of worship should not be tampered with, he warned. Any effort to do so would be bad both for the survival of the Government and the peace of the State, he said. On the issue of iron ore mining, he said that it should be banned unless Karnataka had the potential to manufacture steel from the raw material.
