BANGALORE: Two cars, about 20 computers and other electronic goods were destroyed after a major fire that broke out at a shamiana rental agency situated near the Yediyur Lake in Jayanagar spread to adjoining buildings on Monday afternoon. The flames, which were noticed around 1.15 p.m. at the open air warehouse of the agency, spread to a software company in the neighbouring building and also to the Lake View apartments and the Brahmo Samaj prayer hall nearby. The doors and window panes of four apartments and the prayer hall were damaged. The plastic rain water drain pipes of the apartment also melted, the police said. Shocked residents of the apartment complex and employees of the software company fled the thick flames and smoke. Krishanappa, a security guard working for Niju Technologies, another software company located opposite the shamiana agency, was the first among those who tried to douse the blaze. He and others who came running tried to park the cars away from the flames but the heat overpowered them. One of the car owners, Raghu, also had to back away from the conflagration. One of the witnesses complained that fire tenders arrived well after 45 minutes after being informed of the blaze. About 20 computers, computer peripherals, electrical wiring and other articles were gutted at the software company, Harshita Electronics Inc, a senior official from the Department of Fire and Emergency Service who headed the fire fighting operations told The Hindu. While no one was injured in the incident, huge quantity of shamiana cloth, poles, carpets, mats, utensils and furniture worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed. Two cars that were parked near the agency were badly damaged. The firemen, with the help of 15 fire tenders, battled for over five hours to put out the blaze, the official said. The Banashankari police have registered a case.
