Detained Indian workers to get legal assistance

Dubai: Three Indian workers, detained in connection with the collapse of a bridge here that killed seven of their compatriots, will be defended by their company which has doubled the compensation for the victims.

The seven victims worked for the Wade Adams Contracting Company while those detained are also workers of the same firm.

Wade Adams said it will be seeking the release on bail of its three employees who are currently in police custody in connection with the accident which left seven Indians dead.

A company representative said, “The three employees, who are in the custody of the Dubai Police, are still on our staff and we have to give them full support and legal assistance.”

Indian consulate officials told PTI on Monday that they are also assisting the company to help get bail for the Indians.

He claimed that the company had complied with all safety measures and all the workers were wearing proper uniforms and safety gear at the time of the accident, adding the rescue work was also prompt.

The tragedy took place on Thursday after several iron beams placed on an under-construction bridge toppled over crushing seven labourers and injuring 15 others.

The site engineer, an assistant foreman and one of the crane operators were immediately taken into custody by police following the incident on charges of manslaughter and negligence causing death and injury.

The next of kin of each of the deceased would get 20 years’ salary as compensation instead of 10 years as announced earlier, the company said.

A spokesman said that as an interim measure, the company has decided to give 20,000 dirhams to the next of kin of each of those killed. — PTI
