NEW DELHI: A markedly dismal performance by the consumer durables segment in the manufacturing sector pulled down the growth rate in industrial production to almost half at 6.4 per cent in September this year from 12 per cent achieved in the same month last year. According to the quick estimates of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) released here on Monday, the growth rate for the first half of the current fiscal slumped to 9.2 per cent from a 11.1 per cent increase achieved in the year-ago period. Mainly responsible for the overall poor show during September this year was the manufacturing sector which witnessed a deceleration in growth to 6.6 per cent from 12.7 per cent recorded in the same month of 2006, consumer durables segment being responsible for the drop posting a negative growth of 7.6 per cent. Adding to the overall lower growth was the index for power generation which also slipped to 4.5 per cent in the month under review as compared to a growth of 11.3 per cent notched in September last year.
