MADRID: Atletico Madrid’s hopes of rising closer to the top of the Spanish league were hit by a 0-0 draw at Almeria on Sunday. Atletico, which dropped to sixth place with 21 points, almost conceded a goal on several occasions during its coach Javier Aguirre’s 50th league match in charge. Almeria midfielder Felipe Melo saw his 31st-minute penalty saved by Atletico goalkeeper Leo Franco. Kalu Uche hit the crossbar five minutes later and Alvaro Negredo struck the post in the 61st. Real Madrid, which hosted Mallorca later Sunday, leads the league with 25 points. FC Barcelona, Valencia and Villarreal are a point behind. Bilbao defender Aitor Ocio’s last-minute own-goal gave Espanyol a win which lifted it into fifth place and stretched its unbeaten run to eight games. Igor Gabilondo scored in the third minute for Bilbao, with Espanyol captain Raul Tamudo levelling in the 40th with his sixth goal of the season. Betis striker Mariano Pavone scored twice in the last 10 minutes against Zaragoza, ending his team’s five-game winless streak and relieving the pressure on coach Hector Cuper. Other results: Recreativo Huelva 1 bt Osasuna 0; Deportivo La Coruna 0 lost to Racing Santander 1; Valladolid 1 bt Levante 0.
