HYDERABAD: Hyderabad emerged champion in the senior inter-district handball championship for men with a 19-8 win over Warangal in the final at the Gymkhana ground here on Sunday. For the winner, Shivakumar and Tirumal Reddy scored five goals each, while for the loser Amar struck five times. Visakhapatnam defeated Prakasham 14-12 for third place. Other results: Semifinals: Warangal bt Prakasham 29-22; Hyderabad bt Visakhapatnam 19-14. Meka scores a hat-trickA hat-trick by striker Meka helped Hyderabad Globe score a comfortable 4-0 win over SAI Kurnool in the super league of the SAAP Premier League prize money football tournament at the Gymkhana ground here. Meka struck in the 19th minute off a long-ranger and then again in the 36th minute, capitalising on a fine through pass from Irfan to give Globe a 2-0 lead at the break. In the second session, Meka completed a hat-trick when he cashed in on a misunderstanding between SAI goalkeeper Haribabu and defender Krishna, and slotted the ball in. Substitute Mike completed the tally for Globe with a fine solo effort. Lucky Club strugglesLucky Club defeated GHMC Bisthiwada 7-6 via tie-breaker in the Junior State hockey knockout championship here. For Lucky Club, Ibrahim Khan (2), M.A. Azheer and Md. Imran Khan were the scorers, while Akbar (2), Majid and Shabaz struck for GHMC to make it four-all and take the issue into tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, Ibrahim Khan, Syed Khadir and M.A. Azheer scored for Lucky club while only Mohd. Majeed and Shahbaz were successful for the loser. In another match, Tarbund defeated Republic Boys Club 5-1 after leading 3-1 at the break. Rakesh, Mastan, Hateesh, Mahboob and Ashwin struck once each for the winner, while Anurag reduced the margin. Praveen wins titlePraveen Prasad emerged champion in the seniors’ category with six points in the Jawaharlal Nehru Trophy Brilliant Open State chess championship here. Y.V.K. Chakravarthy, G. Madhukiran, Vijay Kumar Agarwal, N. Venumadhav, with five points, finished from second to fifth in that order. In the juniors category, Mridul Kumar emerged winner, while special prizes were given away to K. Trivedi (under-6), B. Yashwanth (under-8), J. Sai Agni Jeevetesh (under-10), T. Dhruva (under-12) and G. Mallijkarjun (under-14) in the boys’ section and K. Kavya Srishti (under-10), N. Alekhya (under-12) and K.N. Meher Sowjanya (under-14) in the girls’ section. Nehrunagar winsNehrunagar playground men defeated YMCA Hyderabad 56-48 in the first round of the GHMC open basketball tournament at the Victory playground here. Lawyers’ World CupThe first Lawyers’ World Cup cricket championship will be held in Hyderabad from December 30 to January 7 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) here. The league-cum-knockout event will feature eight teams from Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, South Africa, Australia, Kenya and Pakistan. The top two teams from the round-robin league would play in the final. Chief Justice of India, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan will inaugurate the tournament.
