West Ham drubs Derby County

DERBY: Derby County’s chances of surviving in the Premiership were dealt another blow as West Ham United inflicted a demoralising 5-0 defeat on the bottom side on Saturday.

A Lee Bowyer double, an own goal by Eddie Lewis and strikes from Matt Etherington and Nolberto Solano gave West Ham a victory that lifts it into the top half of the double and was its best Premiership win in seven years.

Lucky Newcastle

Earlier, Newcastle United rode its luck to snatch a 1-1 draw in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland thanks to James Milner’s fortunate equaliser.

Sam Allardyce’s side was outplayed for long periods at the Stadium of Light and fell behind to Danny Higginbotham’s 52nd minute header.

But Sunderland was denied a first home victory over its local rival for 27 years when Milner’s cross somehow eluded everyone and crept in at the far post midway through the second half.

Rough justice

It was rough justice for Sunderland, which is now without a win in seven matches. Newcastle will just be relieved to emerge unscathed after another lacklustre display.

Roy Keane has insisted he doesn’t want to keep bemoaning his team’s brave but unrewarded performances, but this was another hard-luck story for the Black Cats.

Sunderland had lost its last five meetings with Newcastle and the bitter memories of those defeats ensured a vociferous atmosphere as the home fans thirsted for revenge.

The results: Newcastle United 1 (Milner 65) drew with Sunderland 1 (Higginbotham 52); Derby County 0 lost to West Ham United 5 (Bowyer 42, 59, Etherington 51, Lewis 55-og, Solano 69). — Agencies
