Bangalore: The air was resonant with goodwill as a host of former cricketers hailed Anil Kumble’s elevation to Test captaincy. Excerpts I am extremely pleased for him. It’s a big honour to lead India in Tests. It has happened a bit late for him, but nevertheless he richly deserves the honour and I extend my congratulations and best wishes to him. — Javagal Srinath I have been watching Anil for a long time and he is a shrewd thinker of the game. This is an honour that could have been bestowed upon him earlier. He deserves it and I always thought that he had it in him to lead the Indian side, but yes to be honest I never thought that he will get the honour so late in his career. — G.R. Viswanath Anil is a perfect team-man, is committed to the game and is non-controversial. He has got the right qualities to lead India in Tests. It is also a proud moment for Karnataka cricket. — Brijesh Patel It is wonderful news. I am sure Anil will handle the mantle of Test captaincy very well and I am sure he will handle the responsibility astutely. He will deliver the goods and I wish him and the team the very best. — E.A.S. Prasanna It’s great news and it has come at the time of Diwali. I wish Anil and family the very best. — B.S. Chandrasekhar It is good that Anil has been named captain, but I wish the selectors had named him captain for a longer tenure instead of just the Pakistan Test series. You cannot put captaincy on trial and not with an experienced player like Anil. — Vijay Bharadwaj
