CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and leaders of various political parties, including All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa extended their greetings on the occasion of the Deepavali festival. Mr. Barnala in his greetings said, “Let Deepavali, the festival of lights, rekindle the spirit of unity and bring in peace and prosperity and all round development in the State and the nation. On this joyous occasion I convey my heartiest greetings and best wishes to the people of Tamil Nadu.”
The philosophy of the Deepavali festival was to dispel the darkness of ignorance and attain enlightenment. “Let the festival remove ignorance, communal and caste clashes and treason and usher in knowledge, equality, brotherhood and patriotism,” said AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy said the festival symbolised wiping out of extremism, terrorism, dictatorship, and arrogance and restoration of peace and tranquillity. On this day let the people take a vow to work together for the further development of the country, he said.
Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan said the UPA Government, under the guidance of its chairperson Sonia Gandhi and leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was implementing various welfare schemes and the day was not far off when the country would become a super power. President of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam Vijaykant, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Su.Thirunavukkarasar, State Janta Dal (S) general secretary D.Rajagopal and Prince of Arcot Mohammed Abdul Ali also greeted the people.
