Violence in Sri Lanka

This refers to the editorial, ‘The escalating violence’ (Nov. 6). I endorse your views that “killing of any kind cannot be condoned but the situation in Sri Lanka is abnormal.” LTTE ‘political wing’ chief S.P. Thamilchelvan was killed in an air raid by the Sri Lanka Air Force and could not have been the specific target. However, the killing could lead to more attacks by the LTTE on the Sri Lankan army. Given the belligerence of both sides, as you have said, the chances of the violence ending soon appear bleak.

Thamilchelvan’s death is a body blow to the terrorist organisation which has now started another bout of violence in the name of fighting for a Tamil homeland. Such outfits deserve no sympathy.

It would have been in the fitness of things if the editorial had ended with an appeal to the sympathisers of the LTTE to use their influence to make the Tigers come to the negotiating table with a constructive proposal for devolution.

Chennai
