IMPERIOUS: Wriddhiman Saha sent the Hyderabad bowlers on a leather hunt during his unbeaten knock of 111.

KOLKATA: Bengal took control of the Ranji Trophy Elite group B league match against Hyderabad restricting it to 65 for five at stumps on the second day of the four-day match at the Eden Gardens here on Monday.

Earlier, the home side was dismissed for 461 just half an hour before tea. Manoj Tiwary hit the second double hundred of his first class career while debutant Wriddhiman Saha cracked his maiden century to become the 15th state cricketer to do so.

Chasing a stiff target, Hyderabad floundered badly after the team’s most dependable batsmen, skipper V.V.S. Laxman and vice-captain Arjun Yadav, fell for no score. At close Amol Shinde and wicketkeeper Habeeb Ahmed were unbeaten on 7 and 1 respectively.

Pitch eases out

With Bengal ahead by 396 runs, Hyderabad will have to score 197 more to avoid following-on. The pitch of course eased out considerably and helped the batsmen as first Tiwary and then Saha reached their landmarks. When Hyderabad batted, Ravi Teja came up with a little cameo to show that there was no devil in the pitch.

Short stay

Looking forward to the Test series against Pakistan, Laxman surprisingly lasted just four balls. The burly Bengal pacer Shib Shankar Paul bounced one but Laxman left it alone. When the second bouncer came, Laxman went for the hook shot and gloved it. Saha, behind the stumps, took a great one-handed catch leaping high to his left.
