Maheswaran wins title

Sivakasi: P. Maheswaran of SRM College (Chennai) and former State junior champion won the title in the Virudhunagar district open chess tournament here on Sunday.

Final standings:

1. P. Maheswaran (5.5/ 6 points); 2. M. Paramasivam (Arupukkottai) 5; 3. R. Visalachi (Jaycees Matric School, Sivakasi) 5; 4. V.S. Satithivel Pandian (Lion Matric School, Sivakasi) 5.

Cricket tournament

At Madurai, the second annual AVEM Cup State-level prize-money knock-out cricket tournament will be organised by Alternate Views Event Management during the third week of December.

The winner will get a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and the runner-up will be richer by Rs. 20,000.

St. Joseph’s CE wins

At Srivilliputhur, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering (Chennai) beat Alagappa Chettiar of Engineering (Guindy) 2-1 and host Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering 2-0 to win the title in the three-team league of the Anna University inter-zone women’s tennis tournament at Krishnankovil on Monday.

The results:

League: St. Joseph’s CE bt AKCE (Krishnankovil) 2-0 (Anandhi bt Cheranmadevi 5-1; Hannah bt Amurtha 5-0); St. Joseph’s CE bt Alagappa Chettiar CE (Guindy) 2-1 (Anandhi lost to Afitha 1-8; Hannah bt Anusha 8-1; Anandhi/ Hannah bt Afitha/ Anusha 8-1).

ACCE (Guindy) bt AKCE (Krishnankovil) 2-0 (Anusha bt Cheranmadevi 5-0, Afitha bt Amurtha 5-0).

Sona EC triumphs

At Virudhunagar, Sona Engineering College defeated host Kamaraj College and Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar Engineering College (Tiruchendur) to win the title in the three-team league of the Anna University inter-zone women’s cricket tournament on Sunday.

The scores:

League: Sona EC 64 for three in 15 overs bt Kamaraj EC 57 for five in 15 overs; Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar (Tiruchendur) 59 for six in 15 overs lost to Kamaraj 60 for three in 12.4 overs; Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar 54 for four in 15 overs lost to Sona EC 55 for two in 11.3 overs.
