BRISBANE: Sri Lanka suffered a chastening blow in the build-up to the first cricket Test against Australia when it lost by four wickets to Queensland in a three-day tour match, which ended on Sunday. Despite a strong fightback on the final day, the tourist was able to set Queensland a chase of only 142 runs in its second innings and the home side reached its winning target with six wickets down, minutes before stumps. Sri Lanka faced an uphill battle when it conceded an 85-run first innings lead and entered the final day at 62 for four in its second innings, still trailing by 23 runs. Chaminda Vaas led a late order revival with an innings of 84 which guided Sri Lanka to 226, giving it an overall lead of 141. Fast bowlers Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof knocked off the Queensland top order, raising the possibility of a remarkable win. But Clinton Perrin’s unbeaten 62 guided the home team to victory. The scores: Sri Lanka 210 for nine decl. and 226 (Chaminda Vaas 84) lost to Queensland 295 and 142 for six in 37.1 overs (Clinton Perrin 62 not out). — Agencies
