BCCI closely monitoring security in Guwahati

Guwahati: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keeping a close watch on Monday’s India-Pakistan one-dayer at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here in view of last year’s violence during the washed out match between the host and England.

“We are keeping a close watch. The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has been issued strict instructions that untoward incidents that took place in the last match should not be repeated,” BCCI Secretary, Niranjan Shah, told PTI over phone.

Guidelines given

Asked whether the ACA has been given any guidelines on the arrangements, Shah said, “they have been told everything.”

He, however, added that security was handled by the State Government and it was for the Assam Government to do the needful.

Shah said a unit of any member-country could be barred by the International Cricket Council (ICC) from staging international matches if there was recurrence of violence incidents like what happened on April 9 last year here.

“The ICC can bar any unit. But I am confident with the measures that have been taken by the ACA and the Assam Government. The match will be held peacefully,” Shah said.

Last year, after the match was abandoned, irate spectators had set a part of the stands on fire besides throwing missiles on the ground.

The matter went to the ICC, which sought an explanation from the BCCI for the crowd trouble. — PTI
