Rear wheels of MTC bus come loose

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The rear wheels of a moving Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus on arterial Kamarajar Salai came loose causing panic amongst motorists on Sunday morning. No one was injured.

As there was very little traffic on the road, there was no damage to other vehicles, but an eyewitness said that it was a frightening sight. The eyewitness, who was driving behind the bus, said he saw the bus swerve to the right and then the rear of the bus collapsed with a loud noise. He also heard the passengers inside scream and scramble to get off the bus. The incident occurred at around 11 a.m., near a traffic signal.

The accident branch of the MTC and the wireless control room were unaware of the incident till 1 p.m. But when The Hindu contacted the depot that the bus belonged to, an official there said the bus had immediately been brought back to the depot.

A senior MTC official said the bus was travelling very fast.
