HYDERABAD: A united opposition is all set to bring out the knives against the Government on a host of contentious issues with the winter session of the Assembly commencing on Monday. The demand for hiking the minimum support price for a quintal of paddy on a par with wheat, alleged irregularities in Indiramma housing scheme, “tardy” relief measures for flood victims, law and order situation in the wake of the twin blasts in the city, ongoing land struggle, plight of Gulf returnees and corruption in irrigation projects are among the issues on which the Government is expected to be cornered by the opposition. Setting the tone for the 10-day session, Telugu Desam president N.Chandrababu Naidu and his MLAs have decided to come to the Assembly on bullock carts symbolising the plight of farmers due to lack of remunerative prices for agricultural produce. The session this time is likely to see some fireworks on major issues, as the Opposition TDP, Left, BJP and TRS joined hands in highlighting these much ahead of the notification of the winter session and the same unity is expected to be displayed in the House. While the TD Legislature Party is expected to focus on MSP, price rise, neglect of welfare, health, education and other sectors, the Left parties are set to insist on a debate on their land struggle and Indiramma programme. The MIM is expected to raise the alleged harassment of Muslim youth by the police and the TRS is likely to concentrate on the “neglect” of Telangana in the irrigation sector. Battlelines drawnThe ruling party is gearing to face the Opposition onslaught by highlighting Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s efforts to impress upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the need to enhance the MSP for paddy.
