Identity cards to be issued to fishermen for safety
5,038 fishermen and 1,373 fisherwomen will get the off-season assistance
PUDUKOTTAI: An off-season assistance of Rs. 76.93 lakh will be disbursed to fisherfolk in the district during this season.
A total of 6,411 persons comprising 5,038 fishermen and 1,373 fisherwomen will get the assistance.
Collector D. Uthirakkumaran made a token distribution of the assistance at a function held at Manamelkudi, about 65 km from here on Tuesday. He also distributed additional assistance to tsunami-hit fishermen of the district.
The assistance included a bicycle, first-aid kit and a lantern.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that a sum of Rs. 1.91 crore had been disbursed to tsunami-hit fishermen in the district.
A sum of Rs. 75.26 lakh had been spent for the addditional assistance distributed yesterday, he said.
He also said that the Fisheries Department was issuing identity cards to fishermen to ensure their safety while venturing into the sea.
He appealed to the fishermen to take maximum advantage of the same.
MLA Udhayam Shanmugam; District Revenue Officer G. Prakasam and Revenue Divisional Officer, Aranthangi, G. Visakan were among the participants.
Nagapattinam
An off-season assistance of Rs.5.02 crore will be disbursed to fishermen of Nagapattinam district for the period from September to December this year. The assistance has been sanctioned under the National Fishermen Savings and Relief Scheme.
The Central government has sanctioned Rs.70.95 lakh; the State Government has contributed Rs.1.80 crores, while the balance has been collected from the members for a period of eight months from January.
In all, 41,994 fishermen and fisherwomen will get the assistance.
Inaugurating the distribution of the assistance at a function held here on Wednesday, Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar said that each beneficiary would get a monthly assistance of Rs.1,200.
