Conservancy issue dominates at Tiruchengode civic body meeting

‘We want this cleaned !’: Councillors complained about workers not clearing garbage from the streets.
TIRUCHENGODE: A few yards away from Kailasanathar Temple, on Sannadhi Street, is a vacant site, which once housed a Government high school and later a primary school.
That was about a decade and a half ago. Today, it is in such a bad shape that the walls may meet the ground anytime.
As and when it falls, the meeting may not be great, for the building has no roof. The place belongs to the Tiruchengode Municipality. The building is of no use but then the town’s residents have made the best of it by converting it into a dump yard.
From waste from wedding halls to hospitals the building houses it all. It has been so for the last five years, much to the chagrin of the residents.
“In the last five years, shopkeepers like me, who are in the building’s neighbourhood, have had a tough time,” complains K. Tamilarasu, a launderer. Stench from the decaying waste, flies, mosquitoes and dogs add to Mr. Tamilarasu’s woes.
His neighbours are no different. The waste has affected the temple town’s pilgrims as well.
“Devotees who come to the town enter and exit the temple through the Sannadhi Street, and as they cross the place, the stench propels their hands to their nose, which appears to be a ritual for those visiting the temple,” Mr. Tamilarasu quips. He wants the Tiruchengode Municipality to clear the place as early as possible. Joining issue with him at Wednesday’s Council Meeting was M. Manickam, Ward 30 Councillor. He told the Council that the dumping has been troubling the residents for a long time.
He suggested clearing up the place for building a library. Chairman R. Natesan and Commissioner T. Kumar promised to look into the issue. The issue of conservancy did not stop with the building alone.
Visalakshi, Councillor representing Ward 6, said conservancy work was bad in the town, and particularly worse in her area. She wanted the civic body to instruct workers to act fast.
Of the 33 wards in the Municipality, conservancy work in 11 of them has been privatised, which the councillors say is the reason for laxity in work.
Other issues that featured at Wednesday’s meeting include removing encroachments at the Old Bus Stand, new road at Sadayapalayam, compensation for those whose houses were damaged in rains, etc. In all, the Council passed 143 resolutions.
