Suraj and Uttara are champions

BANGALORE: R.N. Suraj and Uttara Prakash emerged the under-16 champions in the boys’ and girls’ sections respectively in the Mysore Sandal State-ranking badminton championship here on Tuesday.

In a hard-fought boys’ final which was briefly interrupted by a power breakdown, Suraj, with his attacking net game, prevailed over a spirited Jayant Gowda at 22-20, 21-19.

In the girls’ summit clash, Uttara foiled Reshma Karthik’s bid for a double with a 21-18, 21-10 verdict. Reshma, who had won the girls’ under-13 title, did well to stretch her fancied rival in the first game as she rallied from 10-14 to level at 14 with some telling half-smashes.

However, Uttara, playing steadily from the back court, had the measure of her rival. In the second game, Uttara established a big lead and never looked back.

Srivas prevails

M.C. Srivas prevailed over Sudeep Suresh in the boys’ under-13 final, winning 21-17, 21-9.

Sudeep did well in the first game, tugging at the heels of his rival till 7-7 in the first game, before Srivas capitalised on his rival’s unforced errors to win the first game.

In the second, Srivas outslugged his rival to romp home.

Mithun Manjunath bagged the boys’ under-10 crown with a 21-14, 21-16 win over Abhishek Sonarkar.

The results (all finals): Boys: Under-16: R.N. Suraj bt Jayant Gowda 22-20, 21-19; Under-13: M.C. Srivas bt Sudeep Suresh 21-17, 21-9; Under-10: Mithun Manjunath bt Abhishek Sonarkar 21-14, 21-16.

Girls: Under-16: Uttara Prakash bt Reshma Karthik 21-18, 21-10; Under-13: Reshma Karthik bt Sindhu Bharadwaj 21-11, 21-10. — Special Correspondent
