Three to officiate at Nationals

KOCHI: For the first time, three person will officiate on court at the National senior basketball championship in Puducherry this December.

“The recent men’s FIBA Asian Championship in Japan had three officiating. Now, we’ve decided to introduce it in the Senior National,” Harish Sharma, the Basketball Federation of India secretary, said on Monday evening.

“After this, the junior and youth nationals will also have three referees.”

With an extra official on court, will it make life tougher for the players and easier for the referees?

“Life will be easier for both. There will be fewer controversial decisions, lesser violations and the officials will also be under less pressure,” said Mr Sharma. “We tried it out in an all-India tournament in Delhi early this month but it will be the first time at the National.”

The National Championship begins in Puducherry on December 21.
