KOCHI: Indian badminton’s talented youth brigade will be seen in action in the South Zone and all-India inter-university badminton championships at the St. Peter’s College Stadium, Kolencherry, from November 3 to 10. Hosted by the Mahatma Gandhi University, the men’s and women’s championships will have 45 teams in the South Zone phase (Nov. 3-6) and 16 in the all-India event. The top four finishers from each of the country’s four zones will qualify for the all-India championship which will be held from November 8 to 10. “Some of the country’s best players, including many internationals, will be present,” said Binu George Varghese, the organising secretary. “Bangalore, host Mahatma Gandhi and Nagarjuna should be very strong in the men’s section and Calicut in women’s.” The Kerala Sports Council President, T.P. Dasan, will inaugurate the South Zone event and Arjuna awardee George Thomas will do the opening honours in the all-India meet. Nearly 500 players are expected to take part. — Principal Correspondent
