News Analysis
>>A sentence in a report “Two constitutional options before Rameshwar Thakur” (October 29, 2007) was: “Clause 3 of Article 356 makes it mandatory that both Houses of Parliament approve (or disprove) the Presidential proclamation before two months of it having been made.” “Disprove” should have been “disapprove”. >>The third paragraph in a report “Janadesh rally resolves to fight for land rights” (October 29, 2007) was: “These people Buddhadebe tired and are suffering from malnutrition ….” It was an editing error. It should have been “These people are tired and are suffering from malnutrition.” >>A sentence in “Towards fair farm prices” (Editorial, October 23, 2007) was: “Hence, as is the case this year, despite a satisfactory kharif harvest, the government’s procurement of wheat for the public distribution system has generally fallen short of the target.” A reader says that this should be rabi harvest since wheat is a rabi crop, planted in October-November and harvested by March-April. Kharif crops are planted by June-July and harvested by September-October. The reader is correct. Wheat is predominantly a winter crop. Hence the wording in the editorial should have been “Hence, as is the case this year, despite a satisfactory harvest ….” >>The South African Invitation XI had made 156 in its first innings in reply to New Zealand’s 318. The score (156) was omitted in a cricket report “Oram scalps four” (“Sport”, October 27, 2007). It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
