The objection of Opposition parties, a reflection of their hostility to Dravidian movement Adam’s Bridge was chosen only after all other possible ways were exhausted TIRUCHI: Students must adopt a scientific approach to analyse the Sethusamudram project and not get “carried away by communal forces,” M.K. Kanimozhi, MP, said on Saturday. At the inauguration of students’ clubs at E.V.R. Government College here, Ms. Kanimozhi said the project would put the State on the road of economic progress. Though several alignments were considered, many were found unsuitable as they could affect the marine ecosystem. Adam’s Bridge was chosen only after all other possible ways were exhausted. Criticising the opponents of the project, she said the initial works began during the Bharathiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre. Since the project gained momentum now, the BJP raked up the controversy. Urging the students to be wary of “communal forces” that posed a threat to the integrity of the State, Ms. Kanimozhi said students must voice their support for the project. “The objection of the Opposition parties was a reflection of their hostility to the Dravidian movement,” she said. Visionaries like Periyar toiled to improve the lot of the downtrodden, and the Dravidian movement continued to work for their welfare. But the development projects conceived by the DMK were being stalled by the communal forces, she said. To a question from a student, Ms. Kanimozhi said that while the government had taken measures to familiarise the Tamil language with the students, it would also make Tamil the medium of education in schools. Earlier, she launched the college’s alumni website. N. Siva, MP, and Principal Sheela Gnanasironmani spoke.
