TIRUCHI: Speakers at a function organised by All Ladies’ Clubs, Tiruchi, to mark the release of a book ‘Ilatchiya Penngal’ here on Saturday underlined the need to protect women’s rights for achieving an overall development in the socio-economic fronts. They also warned that gender discrimination will impede growth, causing unrest in the society. Authored by the Principal of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College for Women K. Meena, the book sketches the achievement of 27 women from various walks of life, who toiled hard to achieve their goals in the chosen fields. Releasing the book, K. Kanimozhi MP, said that women, in the present-day context, had been empowered with more powers only after a series of agitations had been launched. However, bound by the chains of social stigma, a larger number of women in the lower-strata were unaware of their rights, she said underlining the need for creating awareness in this regard. She specifically appreciated the inclusion of the achievements of M. S. Subbulakshmi and Papa Umanath in the book. “These women remained unperturbed, facing several odds and challenges till achieving their goals.” Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman, who presided over the function, said that there was a strong case for enacting the women’s reservation bill, ensuring 33 per cent of reservation in Assembly and Parliamentary elections. Ms. Meena said the book had brought out in detail the selfless sacrifices of women who had inspired her to a great extent. She has also planned to bring out the achievements of a few other great women in her subsequent books. The co-ordinator of the Associations, Jambaka Ramakrishnan, offered felicitations. The first copy of the book was received by Booma Ponnavaikko, wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, Ponnavaikko.
