Deepan wins triple jump

CHENNAI: When V. Deepan Kumar (A.M. Jain College) leapt to a distance of 15.13m in his fourth attempt on the opening day of the triple jump event in the AL Mudaliar athletic meet at the Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday, there were whispers that it could be a meet record, and the record books indeed said so — it was in the name of S. Lakshmi Narayanan, who in 2002-03 had jumped 15.06m.

Then, it turned out that the information given in the booklet was wrong. P. Vinoth Raj, who himself was at the venue, clarified that he had cleared 15.47m in 2005-06 in the same meet.

It didn’t matter much to Deepan as he went on to jump 15.30m in the sixth and last attempt — his personal best — to clinch the gold medal.

No meet records were broken or equalled.
