Indians make a mark in German league

Chennai: Sandeep Singh scored one goal for TG Frankenthal on Saturday in its 3-3 draw against Gladbacher HTC in the German hockey league. Gladbacher HTC, which features Olympian Michael Hilgers, Vikram Pillay and Shivender Singh, is last in the table.

Sandeep scored to put his team 2-1 ahead but the final score was 3-3. Frankenthal eventually won the extra point on penalties.

On Sunday, Crefelder HTC crushed Frankenthal 7-1, but the latter is still on a very good fourth place in the table.

The top India stars, Viren Rasquinha, Deepak Thakur and Vinay Swami continued to be inconsistent for the Stuttgarter Kickers. On Saturday the club lost 4-3 at home to Berliner HC, after a 3-1 lead. On Sunday, it drew 3-3 against Champion Club an der Alster Hamburg and won the penalty stroke competition for the extra point. Vinay had scored the equaliser for 2-2. Thakur converted the decisive stroke for the 4-3 win in the competition.

In the northern division of the second league, Prabhjot Singh and Sardara Singh were successful with Rheydter SV. They figured in a 5-2 win at Leverkusen — where Ajtesh Roy scored the opener for the host — and the 5-0 victory at home to Club Raffelberg, with Probhodh Tirkey and Vivek Gupta in its ranks. Prabhjot scored his side’s third and fourth goals in the latter match. The spectators bade farewell to the two Indian players with standing ovations at the end of the match. — Hockey Correspondent
