CHENNAI: It’s one of the most sought-after meet in the city’s athletic calendar. The 40th A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar athletic meet to be held at the Nehru Stadium here from October 16 to 18 offers athletes from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengleput an opportunity to showcase their skills and rest assured that their performances will not go unnoticed. This year, it has been decided to exclude professional colleges. “This time around, we have chosen to include only those colleges affiliated to Madras University,” said Dr. V. Mahadevan, Assistant Director of Physical Education, University of Madras. To bolster his argument, Mahadevan said since the engineering colleges have their own meet, it’s high time the Madras University had one its own. Four hundred and fifty participants from 19 men’s and 14 women’s colleges will be taking part in 43 events in total — 22 for men and 21 for women (no pole vault). “The benefits of this meet are two-fold. One, it gives employment opportunities for the athletes and second, it gives avenues for further studies for the athletes through sports quota,” said Mahadevan. Sangeetha stuns SinghM.R.
