KOCHI: He holds the touring team’s batting record with an unbeaten 139. On Monday, Lanka Cavaliers’ Wasanthlal Fernando came out with some delightful shots as the Sri Lankan veterans crushed Ernakulam XI by eight wickets in their Kerala tour opener at the Nehru Stadium here.

Chasing the home team’s 103, Wasanthlal, a former first class cricketer, belted six huge sixes and two fours in his 44 which came off just 22 balls. With C.P.P. Raj making 30 (five fours), the visiting veterans side won the 20-over game with a lot to spare. Former Kerala captain J.K. Mahendra was Ernakulam’s top-scorer with 37. The Sri Lankans next play Kerala Veterans ‘A’ at the Tripunithura Palace Oval in a 40-over game on Tuesday.

The scores: Ernakulam Veterans XI 103 for nine in 20 overs (J.K. Mahendra 37) lost to Lanka Cavaliers 105 for two in 13.5 overs (Wasanthlal Fernando 44 retd. hurt, C.P.P. Raj 30 retd hurt). — Principal Correspondent
