Viji bags a double

Tirunelveli: It was a golden double for C. Viji of Sri Parasakthi College, Courtallam, as she won two events (800 and 10000m) in the women’s section of the 22nd Manonmaniam Sundaranar University inter-collegiate athletic meet at the University ground, Abisekapatti near here on Monday.

The results: (winners only) Men: 800m: Karthisan (Margoschis) 2:02.8s; 10000m: Sathyaraj (Margoschis) 35:48.2s; Discus: Muthuraj (Aditanar, Tiruchendur) 35.75m.

Women: 800m: C. Viji 2:32.0s; 10000m: C. Viji 44.06.4s; Triple jump: Ramalakshmi (TDMNS) 11.07m.

Rain plays spoilsport

Rain played havoc on the final day of the State-level inter-collegiate and inter-school basketball tournaments organised by Y’s men Club at Virudhunagar on Sunday night.

The inter-school final between St. Paul’s HSS (Salem) and St. Francis Xavier HSS (Tuticorin) was abandoned just before half-time, with St. Paul’s leading 26-15.

The inter-collegiate title-clash match between Sathya Bama University (Chennai) and SRM University (Chennai) in the semifinal round robin league was washed out.

As the teams had to leave Virudhunagar on the night itself, the teams were declared joint-winners in both the tournaments.

Madras Christian College (Tambaram) beat Kamaraj College of Engineering 48-30 for its only win to finish third in the colleges’ league.

In the schools third place play-off, MSP Solai Nadar HSS (Dindigul) beat ICF HSS (Chennai) 40-20.

Nishantha wins gold

B.H. Nishantha of Sri Lanka and G. Karthik of YMCA (Chennai) won gold medals in men’s black belt in Kata and Kumite respectively in the Indo-Sri Lanka international karate championship organised by Goju-Ryu World Karate-do Sholuklal India at Madurai on Sunday.

Other results (winners only): Kata (Boys): Black belt: Juniors: Dilshan Modusan (Sri Lanka); Sub-juniors: Ankil I. Gupta (Gujarat); 11-12 years: Eswan Raja (TN); 13-15 years: S. James (Mumbai).

Brown belt: S. Hitmankcart (S. Africa).

Girls: Brown belt: 13-15 years: P. Agasta (Madurai); 11-12: S. Cuba (TN); U-10: B. Lcona (Kerala); U- 8: Rohini (Mumbai).

Kumite (Boys): Black belt: Juniors: Jesudas Kannan (St. Mary’s Lucas); 36-40kg: Ankil Gupta (Dolphin); 50-55kg: Rajendra Prasad (Sri Lanka).

Girls: 21-25kg: S. Monisha (Ruby MHSS); 26-30kg: Vishnu Priya (Mary Anna); 36-40kg: Githanjali (Vikaasa); 40-45kg: Abirami (SBOA).

MNU JNHSS posts win

MNU Jeyaraj Nadar Higher Secondary School beat host Idayam Rajendran Residential School ‘B’ team 41-32 in the inaugural match of the seventh annual State-level basketball tournament at Madurai on Monday.
