Selection Committee Chairman, Dilip Vengsarkar’s recent remark that senior players should either perform or perish was unwarranted. Sourav Ganguly rightly took exception and with his performance in Nagpur proved that “action speaks louder than words.” As an old timer, I remember the happenings after England lost to Australia in the 1956 Lord’s Test. Cyril Washbrook at 41 was recalled to the England side. He made 98, shared a 187-run stand with Peter May after the side was down 18 for three. England went on to win by an innings! R. Sundar Rajan, Chennai Racial abuse? With reference to the alleged racial abuse of Andrew Symonds by the spectators in Baroda, it is doubtful if Indians will resort to such things, since they have been victims earlier. It appears as a mere ploy of the Australians and their media to blow out of proportion and term all those catcalling and booing as racial abuse. Even our own players are not spared when they do not perform well. At Nagpur it was clear from what came on TV that it was Symonds who started the exchange of words with Irfan Pathan when he clouted him to the boundary. V. Mahalingam, Chennai Unsporting AussiesThere is no denying that it has been Andrew Symonds’ show all the way in Australia’s series win. However, he himself is not above board when it comes to being sporting. When somebody replies to his taunts it is termed racial abuse but sledging is believed to be a common practice in cricket. Col. M. Venkatraman, Chennai History repeatingShortly after the 1983 World Cup, the West Indies toured India and thrashed us in the Tests and in the ODIs as though to prove that India’s triumph in the World Cup was an aberration. After India’s recent T20 triumph it appears history is repeating itself with Australia doing the damage now. Francis Chandy, Kochi Great achievementIt is a great achievement for Mark Boucher, the South African wicketkeeper to establish a world record with his 396th dismissal in the recent Test series in Pakistan. South Africa had been out of international cricket for a while and so it is remarkable that in the short period since its return, a world record should have come from a cricketer of that country. U. Javid Latif, Dindigul Robin Singh ignoredAfter the triumph in the World T20 cricket, the team members were all given substantial rewards. In Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister sanctioned Rs. 5 lakh for State cricketer Dinesh Karthik but fielding coach Robin Singh has been ignored. The Karnataka government has not overlooked bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad while honouring the cricketers from the State. P.V.Meenakshisundaram, Chennai
