Chennai: Urban Self-Help Groups in Tamil Nadu will soon get a big boost with the Asian Development Bank agreeing to chip in with liberal financial assistance. A high-level ADB team will visit the State in November to take up with local officials the issue of expanding the SHG network in the State, especially in urban centres. This is a follow-up of the ADB’s appreciation of the performance of existing SHGs in tsunami-affected areas of the State. “Out of the $49.99 million allotted by the ADB under the Tsunami Emergency Assistance Project, $47.78 million—nearly 95 per cent—has been spent on the SHGs. The bank is also impressed with the loan recovery scheme. Hence, they have agreed to step up funding,” Revenue Minister I. Periasami told reporters at the end of a meeting between a visiting ADB delegation headed by its president Haruhiko Kuroda and top government officials at the Secretariat on Sunday. The ADB delegation reviewed the status of tsunami recovery projects in the State on Saturday, with field visits to affected areas such as Nagapattinam. Revolving funds“Revolving funds have been issued to 43,366 SHGs, economic assistance to 3,376 SHGs and 1.44 lakh members have been given employment-oriented skill training with ADB assistance,” Mr. Periasami said. The ADB had provided assistance of about $143.75 million under TEAP for rehabilitation and reconstruction activities. Of this, $83.26 million had already been spent and the balance too would be spent soon. ADB officials expressed happiness with the progress made by the State in tsunami recovery. “Tamil Nadu has fulfilled our expectations. A combination of efforts by the State Government, local bodies and voluntary groups has made it possible,” Mr. Kuroda said. The ADB delegation comprised Ashok Lahiri, executive director; Masao Uno, chief advisor to the president; Kunio Senga, director general of the South Asia department; Tadashi Kondo, country director and Kavita Prasad from the Department of Economic Affairs, Government of India. Senior State government officials including M.F. Farooqui, State Relief Commissioner, Development Commissioner and Commissioner of Revenue Administration; Ambuj Sharma, Revenue Secretary; C.V. Shankar, Officer on Special Duty (Relief and Rehabilitation); K. Gnanadesikan, Finance Secretary; Ashok Vardhan Shetty, Rural Development Secretary; R Sellamuthu, Housing and Urban Development Secretary; K Allaudin, Highways Secretary and K. Deenabandu, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Secretary participated in the meeting.
