CHENNAI: Congress Working Committee member V. Arun Kumar, in charge of party affairs in the State, is confident of uniting leaders of various factions in the State unit of the party.
Talking to newsmen after meeting MPs, MLAs and AICC members at the party headquarters Sathyamurthy Bhavan here on Sunday, Mr. Arun Kumar said that factionalism in the State was a “tricky and sensitive issue” and his top priority would be to bring all leaders together and move unitedly. As a first step he had asked Union Ministers and leaders to visit Sathyamurthy Bhavan whenever they were in Chennai.
Record book
A record book would be maintained for this purpose. He would visit the State frequently and tour villages to meet workers at the grass-roots level.
He planned to conduct at regular intervals party meetings in which State leaders would participate.
Admitting that office-bears had not been appointed for the party for a long time, Mr.Arun Kumar said the high command was aware of it and would soon take necessary steps.
Mr. Arun Kumar said the Congress as a constituent of the Democratic Progressive Alliance in the State had taken up the public issues with the government directly and found solution to them. There was no need for any agitation that would embarrass the State Government.
Mr.Arun Kumar said he was a representative of the high command and his duty was to convey its instructions to the State president and represent the views of the workers here to the high command.
Almost 95 per cent of the invitees attended the meeting and those who could not attend it informed him of their inability to do so over phone.
He released the Tamil translation of India’s nuclear energy programme and the 123 agreement with the United States, brought out by the TNCC.
Earlier, he visited Sriperumbudur and paid homage at the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial.
