SEARING PROBLEM: Burning of garbage on the fringes of Perumbakkam lake poses safety hazard to residents of nearby localities.
TAMBARAM: Burning of garbage near the Perumbakkam lake has irked residents of localities in four village panchayats.
For several months, garbage has been dumped on the sides of the Mambakkam Main Road unchecked by either Vengaivaasal village panchayat, under whose jurisdiction the spot is located or other government agencies. Of late, the mounds of garbage are being set on fire. .
As a result, a blanket of smoke engulfs the localities in the neighbourhood. Four panchayats — Medavakkam, Vengaivaasal, Sithalapakkam and Perumbakkam — are located around the lake. The waterbody with an expanse of about 200 acres caters to a small patch of agricultural land, where vegetables and other commercial crops are raised.
Residents of Viduthalai Nagar said staff from some panchayats found the spot convenient to dispose of garbage generated in the rural local bodies.
With little attention being given to solid waste management in most village panchayats of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, waterbodies and open spaces were the casualty.
Staff at Vengaivaasal village panchayat said garbage was being dumped by private operators.
Garbage dumping by such groups went on at night and hence, they were unable to catch the offenders.
At present garbage generated in Vengaivaasal was being dumped in an open space within the panchayat limits and not elsewhere, including the lake’s fringes.
Residents of Sowmya Nagar are not convinced.
They said garbage dumping could not be done by anyone else except the rural local bodies.
