CARBON DEPOSIT: Smoke painting by M. Rajappa of Pudukottai. —
PUDUKOTTAI: More than painting, evolving innovations in painting has been his life-time objective. The youth has succeeded in various attempts, converting a small pebble into a thing of beauty by painting images of Ganapathy and other gods; painting into an egg-shell without breaking it; glass-painting, so on and so forth.
For 33-year-old M. Rajappa of Pudukottai town, there seems to be no end in innovations. His latest venture is to use carbon deposits collected from lamps as the lone colour for his paintings.
He does not use any conventional brush to paint the images using carbon and instead, uses a piece of paper rolled into a stick-like form. After collecting deposit of carbon on a piece of glass from the flames of a kerosene lamp, he scrubs the paper with the earth, till its end is softened.
“The softer the tip, the smoother the painting,” he adds, before setting out to paint the image of Mahatma Gandhi.
It is not that easy to use the carbon as a painting colour, due to slow process of its deposit on the image, he says. He has been imparting free training on painting to youths twice a week. He also plans to teach the nuances of carbon painting to them.
