Mahalakshmi in lead

BANGALORE: M. Mahalakshmi of Tamil Nadu led the field in the girls’ section of the Under-9 National chess tournament here after the fourth round.

Mahalaskhmi opened with the Queen’s Pawn and soon trapped Ankita’s knight to gain a piece advantage and win the game. Tamil Nadu’s C.K. Varsha caused an upset of sorts when she held Goa’s Ivana Furtado to a draw.

In the boys’ section, Diptyan Ghosh, playing on the top board, beat Ashwat P. Hari of Tamil Nadu to share the lead with six other players including top seed Orissa’s Sidhanth Mohapatra after the fourth round.

Sidanth beat Adarsh Srivastava of Uttar Pradesh.

KEB HS in last four

KE Board’s High School (Dharwad) defeated St. Paul’s High School (Hubli) by 68 runs to enter the semifinals of the Srinivas Bendre memorial under-14 inter-school cricket tournament in Dharwad on Saturday.

Earlier, an all-round performance by Goutam (57 not out and five for 11) enabled Pavan English Medium High School register a 21-run win over SDM Central School (Dharwad).

The scores: Pavan EM HS 126 for six in 20 overs (Goutam 57 not out) bt SDM Central School 105 in 19.1 overs (Goutam five for 11).

KEB HS 132 in 20 overs (Shashank Hulamani 24) bt St. Paul’s HS 64 in 15 overs (Hanumant Mangli three for 11, Rakesh Wali three for 16).

Patil enters final

M.Y. Patil of Karnataka State Police (Davanagere) defeated Bijapur’s S.G. Malagi 3-0 to enter the 84kg final of the ‘Dasara Kanteerava’ title bout in the State-level Dasara wrestling championships in Mysore on Sunday.

Priyanka hogs limelight

Priyanka V Biradar of Gulbarga hogged the limelight by winning the gold in the 15-20kgs Colour Belt Individual Kumite for women on the concluding day of the Dasara Karate championships at the Chamundivihar Indoor Stadium in Mysore on Sunday.
