THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Host Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur entered the quarterfinals of the 34th State under-19 inter-district football championship at the Central Stadium here on Sunday. Thiruvananthapuram defeated Kannur by a solitary goal with Sijo S. Fernandez converting a free-kick in the ninth minute. Kannur wasted a few gilt-edged chances as Thiruvananthapuram survived to enter the quarterfinals. Thrissur overcame Alappuzha 2-0 encounter to enter last eight. The margin of defeat would have been higher if not for the fine saves made by Alappuzha goalkeeper Nandu Krishnan. Thrissur forwards wasted plenty of chances and didn’t do justice to the territorial advantage they enjoyed on the field. Sreejith Raj opened scoring for Alappuzha in the 29th minute while R.P. Diljith increased the lead in the 37th minute.
