Creation of 20 more posts of judges favoured

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has favoured creation of 20 more Additional Judge vacancies in the court, and a representation in this regard has already been sent to the State Government, said Justice P. Sathasivam, Judge, Supreme Court. The court at present has a sanctioned strength of 49, of which six are vacant.

Addressing the members of the Tamil Nadu Motor Accident Claims Tribunal Practising Advocates Association at a felicitation function, the Judge said Chief Justice A.P. Shah had also sent copies of the letter to the Chief Justice of India as well as the Union Ministry for Law and Justice.

Mr. Justice Sathasivam said he too would convey the feelings of the High Court to the authorities concerned, and explain to them the justification in the demand for increasing the strength of Judges in the Madras High Court by another 20.

He also said that he would keep in mind the requests of advocates in the Madurai Bench of the High Court that more advocates from the region should be considered for elevation.

Mr. Justice Sathasivam said though the field of motor accident claims appeared to be an easy portfolio, insurance companies would raise various technical objections making award tough.

Claimants’ predicament

He said that he was of the personal opinion that courts should realise the predicament of claimants and that they should not work to defeat the objective of the beneficial legislation.

K. Chandramohan, Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, said Mr. Justice Sathasivam was known to encourage young advocates to argue their cases before him, and said his patience and pleasing manners endeared him to the entire advocate community in Tamil Nadu.

The Chairman said the elevation of Mr. Justice Sathasivam to the apex court and his further prospects made him the pride of the entire Tamil Community in general and the legal fraternity in particular.

“Pole star”

While K.K. Dhandapani, president of the Association, said Mr. Justice Sathasivam would be the “pole star of the Indian judiciary,” senior advocate Gangaram Prasad suggested that the Judge write his autobiography as it would explain his pilgrimage from humble beginnings to the highest temple of justice.
