Guilty will be taken to task, says Army

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Army has said that anyone held responsible for the alleged beating up of Jammu and Kashmir police personnel and ransacking of their Magam post in Kupwara district will be “taken to task.”

“Both sides are trying to find out what went wrong. There must be fault on both sides. We are feeling bad and are looking into it,” said the Army’s Srinagar spokesman, Col. A.K. Mathur.

Major Gen. Rajinder Singh also went to the police post to ascertain details of the incident. “There is nothing more than that. All of us felt sorry for the incident and are trying to find out the root cause,” he said.

According to Col. Mathur, the incident might have taken place due to a misunderstanding at the junior and lower levels and it got hyped “because the media played a major role.”

The Jammu and Kashmir police have registered a first information report against a Major of 33 Rashtriya Rifles and 30 jawans on charges of attempt to murder.

The spokesman said the incident had not vitiated relations between the Army and the police.

“We are carrying out joint operations relentlessly in all parts of the State and we have received encouraging results,” he said.
