Shiyad plays a stellar role as MEG wins

BANGALORE: Captain and stopper Shiyad had a hand in both the goals as MEG maintained its unbeaten run in the Super Division football league with a facile 2-0 win over BEL at the Football Stadium here on Tuesday.

BEL earned three corners within the first four minutes of play. But after doing most of the running in the first 15 minutes, BEL surrendered the advantage in the midfield to the Sappers. MEG slowly took control and but for a late BEL resurgence, held complete sway over the proceedings.

Shiyad’s long throw-in in the 32nd minute bounced in front of the defence and Lokeshwar Singh headed it backwards onto the path of Girish, who wasted little time in volleying it home.

In the 43rd minute, MEG earned a free-kick about 40 yards out but this time Shiyad thundered a long ranger which hit the underside of the cross-piece and bounced inside the goal-line.

MEG almost got a third when BEL’s Musharef deflected a Shiyad throw-in onto his own post, the ball however bounced back into play.

MEG now has 14 points from six matches (four wins and two draw) while BEL tasted its first defeat in five outings and have three wins and a draw for 10 points.

In the A Division league tie, RWF routed AGORC 4-1. Satish Kumar (3) and Naveen Babu scored for the winners while Raju struck AGORC’s lone goal.

RWF have won all its three ties so far while AGORC one win, two draws and a loss in its four outings.
