Karun named ‘most improved driver’

VALENCIA: Karun Chandhok finished his first season in the GP2 series on a positive note with a point for the fastest lap in race one, collecting the award for the ‘most improved driver of the year’ and earning a test with the 2007 champion team I-Sport International.

Karun did well to qualify 13th, four places ahead of teammate Borja Garcia, at the latter’s home race run in wet conditions.

Despite this, by the end of lap 1, Karun moved up to the 10th spot.

However, he suffered a technical problem at this stage and had to go off the circuit twice and eventually dropped out of title contention.

As the track dried up, the team and the driver chose to use the race as a testing opportunity and it paid off as Karun set the fastest lap of the race on lap 42, earning himself another championship point.

Starting 17th on the grid, based on the results of race 1, the final race of the year was a fairly processional affair.

Karun was closely behind Andreas Zuber and championship runner-up Lucas di Grassi, while Bruno Senna and Adam Carroll were trailing him.

After a small mistake put him back a couple of places, Karun collided with Finland’s Marcus Niemala while trying to regain ground and that put an end to his race.

Reflecting on the year, Karun said “All in all, it’s been a good year… I’m looking forward to testing with I-Sport soon.”
