8 Lankans join IPL

NEW DELHI: Eight players from the current Sri Lankan Test and one-day cricket squads, including captain Mahela Jayawardene and spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, have signed up to play in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had recently launched the IPL, which will be played in the globally popular Twenty20 format.

Having already signed-up stars like Shane Warne, Stephen Fleming and Glen McGrath, the IPL on Monday announced the signing of eight current Sri Lankan players — Jayawardene, Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Zoysa, Farveez Maharoof and Dilhara Fernando.

The IPL, slated to start in April 2008, will feature eight franchises in the first season, with each team playing seven home and away games against one another. The prize money at stake is $3 million. — Special Correspondent
