D. Rajanarsimha HYDERABAD: The Joint Action Committee of Teachers’ Organisations has deferred its move to go on an indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday, following an understanding it reached with the Government on its main demands here on Monday. School Education Minister C. Damodar Rajanarsimha held the discussions with the leaders of JACTO, a representative body of over 20 teacher organisations and conceded several demands. Announcing the decision to defer the strike move to reporters later, N. Narayana, Shaikh Jelani, both JACTO steering committee members and K. Venugopal, president, AP Teachers’ Federation, said they would, however, launch the strike if the Government fails to keep its word. They said the Government had agreed to bring those teachers working in the Tribal Welfare Department and municipal bodies under the purview of integrated service rules. It also agreed to treat the “apprentice teacher” service as regular service and accordingly allow notional increments. The two-and-half years of compulsory training of Vidya Volunteers would be counted as regular service. They said the Minister also agreed to treat five days of boycott of spot valuation of SSC papers by teachers as casual leave. He promised to fill all vacant teachers’ posts.
