“1.5 crore jobs will be available in five years”

CHENNAI: About 1.5 crore job opportunities will be available in various sectors including automotive, construction and textiles in the next five years, Special Commissioner of Employment and Training P. Sivakami said here on Sunday.

She was participating in a function organised by Sri Vidyasagar Educational Trust to distribute scholarships to students undergoing industrial training and polytechnic courses.

Ms. Sivakami said the State Government had proposed to start a short-term course in ‘Modular Employable Skill’ in government and private institutions at a cost of Rs. 8 crore to ease the shortage of skilled workers in the above sectors.

The course would be three months, she added.

A member of the Trust and former bureaucrat A.K. Venkata Subramanian said it was unfortunate that students undergoing vocational and industrial training were treated as labour force.

He said that it was the duty of the educated people to help the downtrodden.

He urged the Special Commissioner of Employment and Training to create a dialogue between the industry, industrial training institutions and the students undergoing vocational training.

Gandhi Study Centre Director A. Annamalai requested the Special Commissioner of Employment and Training to look into the issue of preparing question papers in Tamil language for students taking polytechnic and industrial training examinations, as the question papers are now printed only in English and Hindi.

Sri Vidyasagar Educational Trust distributed scholarships worth Rs.1.79 lakh to 61 needy students.

Its chairman Iravatham Mahadevan participated.
