“Members of the family are also affected if one senior member has dementia”
BOOK RELEASE: M.S. Ananth (centre), Director, IIT Madras, releasing “Neurolinks,” the first copy of which was received by artist Vyjayanthimala Bali at a function in Chennai on Friday. (From left) Krishnamoorthy Srinivas, chairman of the Institute of Neurological Sciences, VHS; Kazuo Minagawa, Consul-General of Japan, and E.S. Krishnamoorthy, organising convener, are in the picture. CHENNAI: It is necessary to formulate social support models to care for persons with dementia, speakers at the Asian regional congress on Frontiers of Dementia Care and Research, concurred. While it was important to raise awareness of the condition, it was equally important to develop socially and culturally-acceptable services for persons with dementia as also for their care givers, Jacob Roy, Chairman, Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), said during the inaugural ceremony of the conference. Members of the family are also affected if one senior member has dementia. The conference was organised jointly by the Institute of Neurological Sciences-VHS Hospital, also serving as the first congress of the Asian Society Against Dementia and the 13th annual meeting of the ARDSI. E.S. Krishnamoorthy, organising convener and director of the Institute of Neurological Sciences and Neurosciences India Group, said dementia, which was a progressive and irreversible disorder, takes its toll on not only the patient but also the family members. The problem was being compounded with the fragmentation of the joint family system; wherein old people were left to fend for themselves. Nothing could substitute the care provided by the family, he added. The meeting was an attempt to focus on the social aspects, going beyond medical treatment of the condition. N.Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, said the proposed ‘Parents and Senior Citizens’ Bill, 2007’ would make it a legal obligation for children to support their parents and elders. While it remained to be seen how such a law, when passed, could be stringently implemented. Even when implemented, it would benefit only a small group of people with adequate resources, not those who were impoverished, he said. It was important to address the core of the issue — mass deprivation. The government was being miserly in providing resources, he charged, adding that the State would have to be made to face the challenge. Japanese Consul General in Chennai, Kazuo Minagawa, stressed on the need to share experiences, information and research finding among nations in the Asian region. Dementia was and would continue to be a big problem for the region, with India and China having the largest numbers of people with dementia. IIT Madras Director M.S.Ananth said the engineers and scientists of the institution were keen on interacting with the medical community to see if they could contribute towards finding solutions for some of the problems. Earlier, he released ‘Neurolinks’ a journal of neurosciences and handed over the first copy to Vyjayanthimala Bali, artist. Ms.Bali said people should consider caring for the elderly as a privilege rather than as a burden. N.S. Murali, honorary secretary, VHS, announced that a stroke ward would be set up in the Taramani campus, with funding from the Dirubhai Ambani Trust. Krishnamoorthy Srinivas, Chairman, Institute of Neurological Sciences, VHS, and J.M.Orgogozo, chairman, International Working Group for the Harmonisation of Dementia Drug Guidelines also spoke.
