Ring Road gets vulnerable Law & order

Official focus is on preventing crimes and accidents, says S. Vijay Kumar

With all buses originating from southern destinations being diverted via Ring Road to the Mattuthavani integrated bus stand, the 27.2-km stretch has become more vulnerable to accidents. As vehicular traffic has increased on Ring Road, the official machinery is focussed on preventing crimes and accidents.

In a surprise inspection on Friday, Collector S.S. Jawahar got into action on Ring Road and intercepted three Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses that took the wrong lane at toll gate. He asked the driver to reverse the vehicle and proceed on the right track.

Instructions were given to the TNSTC Managing Director and Road Transport Officers to take appropriate action against drivers jumping lanes.

“No compromise”

“We are taking all steps to minimise road accidents by creating awareness among drivers on safety norms. There should be no compromise. Stringent action will be taken against rash and negligent driving. We are planning to declare November as an accident-free month,” Mr. Jawahar said.

Officials of various departments will carry out a joint inspection of Ring Road on Saturday to evaluate safety measures.

“We will be looking at vulnerable points and identify places for widening the road. If the five wholesale markets in the southern part of the city are shifted, traffic on Ring Road will increase further. Bus bays will be created in order to avoid congestion on the road,” Superintendent of Police T.S. Anbu said.

The district police also plans to intensify highway patrolling and introduce surprise vehicle checks on Ring Road to prevent crimes. Breathalysers will be used to check drunken driving, police sources said.
