PUDUKOTTAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi laid the foundation stone and declared open 279 buildings, classrooms and other infrastructure facilities here on Friday. He also inaugurated the fifth phase of distribution of free two acre land and free house site pattas. The total outlay for the above programmes is Rs.206.67 crore -- including Rs.172.91 crore for 4,375 works to be taken up this financial year and Rs.24.78 crore for 279 works completed so far. In all, 1,163 landless agricultural labourers got free land of 855.88 acres valued at Rs.1.46 crores while house-site pattas worth about Rs. 1.19 crore were distributed to 2,321 beneficiaries. Under the ‘social security scheme,’ cash relief of Rs. 38.71 lakh was disbursed to 404 persons. The new projects to be taken up this year include rural water supply scheme at an expenditure of Rs. 74.33 lakh; the World Bank-aided Pambar and South Vellar Basin development at an outlay of Rs. 43.33 crore; Tsunami rehabilitation schemes at Rs.13.17 crore; National Highway project at Rs.4.40 crore and rural development works under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam at an outlay of Rs. 20.60 crore. Those declared open included overhead tanks and other infrastructure worth Rs.1.05 crore, additional classrooms for schools worth Rs.1.09 crore, and PWD buildings worth Rs.12.54 crore. In all, 9,395 beneficiaries received assistance valued at Rs. 8.98 crore. ‘Coleroon diversion’Referring to a request by Alankudi MLA S. Rajasekaran, the Chief Minister replied that the ‘Coleroon Surplus Water Diversion’ programme would be implemented in due course of time. R.M. Subburam, the MLA from Tirumayam, pleaded for steps for starting an IT park and medical college in Pudukottai. Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy presided. Collector S. J. Chiru, Ministers Durai Murugan and Arcot N. Veerasamy and Tiruchi Member of Parliament L. Ganesan were present.
